Purchasing Leads Can Do More Harm Than Good

Author: Anthony Schumacher

You keep hearing, build your list, build your list. Well about a year ago I had a small list. I knew I had to do something if I wanted to get my business going. So I started searching for a fast way to build my list.

I had heard that buying leads or using co-reg was the way big time marketers build there lists. Buying leads can save a lot of time necessary for list building. So I decided to try a co- registration service.

I did not have a lot of money, so I started with $25.00 a month and it came out to about 20 cents for each email address. I would receive around 125 or so subscribers a month. After about 6 months or so my list was growing quite large. But I still did not think that it was large enough and wanted the list to grow faster.

That's when I saw an ad from a well known marketer. I could buy a list of 5000 email addresses and I would be on my way. The price of the email list was about $57.00. So I thought, boy what a deal this is, when you consider that the experts say that every one subscriber that you have is worth $1.00 a month in sales. So if I had 5000 subscribers, that would mean $5000 in sales.

With the subscribers that I already had, plus the new list I just purchased, I now had a list of almost 10,000 subscribers. I followed the instructions for warming up my new list that I received with the purchase.

Which read:

Never, ever send your 1st contact email as an offer for your product/service! Yes you will be excited and want to start making sales right away, but remember this is a new list and these people do not know who you are as of yet.

There is more to the warm up process, but I should have know better, when part of the warm up process is to warm up people that do not know who I am. Any way, some were quite angry with me, and I almost had my website shut because they said I was spamming them.

Gee, the will know marketer did not say anything about being careful, you could be shut down because of spam. I followed all the instructions as they were written. So if you ever decide to build a list of subscribers, do not buy leads, do not buy a email list even if it is from a well know marketer.

It just doesn't work, because if it did, why would they sell the subscribers in the first place, if they can make $1.00 per subscriber. A list of 10,000 would be $10,000 a month for them, that I paid just $57 for. Do not make the same mistake I did.
